My dog is a pom-chi (pomeranian chihuahua) and is supposed to be about 11 pounds as per the vet and is about 14-15. That’s only a few pounds, but it’s not good for a small dog. I don’t want him to get too overweight and have his joints affected. Especially since he runs and jumps all over the place without fear.

He is also beyond picky and kind of refuses to eat dry food.

  1. Canidae weight control dry dog food. Its available in about any pet supply shop. ( Locally owned shops, not necessarily the big chains)
Or you can reduce the amount that you feed, feed a 1/4 cup of green beans to make him feel full, and take him for longer walks., or more active play time.

Beyond picky..is in your favor.. Put him down a GOOD quality food..with meat as the first ingredient ( such as Canidae) and he will put himself on a diet..He will not starve himself to death, and what he does eat will be good nutrition.

  2. You don’t really have to feed him diet food, just feed him less than you are right now. Discuss it with your vet and they can help you find the right amount to feed him.

  4. With a dog that small, even if its expensive, it last a long time. Doesn’t have to be diet food. Just feed less. Science diet has a good diet dog food. I think its called r/d or similar.

  5. Dry food is best and all commercial brands meet all a dog’s nutritional requirements so I recommend trying foods until you find one he likes. Diet foods are just a convenience – they add fiber of some sort so you can feed more with less calories. Less food works too. According to every major veterinary school, one should never feed raw meat or bones (raw or cooked) so I’d stay away from the raw recipes. If he refuses to eat dry, there is a product available in some markets that is mostly meat , that is cheaper then canned, and I’ve yet to se a dog refuse it – Bil Jac frozen. More exercise (walks are not exercise – they are mainly for a dog’s mental health) is also a great way to keep weight down.

Also, watch out for gimmicks like meat as the first ingredient in a dry dog food; they just use separately listed multiple grains to get around the labeling laws.

  6. dogs are carnivores (teeth/jaws designed for ripping and tearing) from what i’ve read they are not true omnivores (teeth/jaws designed for chewing & grinding) but they can "survive" on inappropriate foods if that’s all they are offered. to thrive they need to eat foods that nourish all their biological systems.

real meat & animal parts (either raw or cooked) are appropriate to supply the necessary nutrients like amino acids & proteins that suit their body requirements. realistically raw and home cooked isn’t for everyone & you can make other choices. grainy foods are high in carbs and may increase weight gain – cutting out the carbs might also help him loose weight. here’ s a list of meat based foods:
Nature’s Variety (raw instinct kibble, canned, raw frozen, dehydrated); Innova EVO – canned & kibble; Ziwipeak; Primal Raw Pet Foods; Wysong Au Jus All Meats; Northwest Naturals Raw Dog Food; Natural Balance Fish & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food; Natural Balance Potato & Duck Dog Food Allergy Formula; Raw Advantage; Organic Critical Care for Dogs & Cats; Raw Advantage Organic Only Meat; Timberwolf Wild & Natural; Northwest Naturals Raw Dog Food; FarMore Raw Food Diets; Sojos Europa Grain-Free Dog Food Mix; Solid Gold Barking at the Moon Dry Dog Food; Solid Gold Green Tripe Canned Food; Tripett Lamb tripe; Iceland Pet Pate for Dogs; Canine Caviar Canned Food for Cats and Dogs

(please double check that the foods you choose are not associated w/ current pet food recalls. you can check current recalls at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/#Dog )

the good news is that chihuahua’s are pretty inexpensive to feed compared to the large breeds. when you use a food that is designed for a dogs digestive system you’ll have less poop so your money is going toward nutrition your dog benefits from instead of high priced poopies from ingredients that passed right through and wind up on the ground.

many food companies on the above list will send you samples or coupons so you can see if your dog will eat them.
