My dog has had diarrhoea for about 2 days now, and I’m wondering what is a suitable diet for him. Should I bring him to the vet as well? If not, are there any home treatments that I can use on my dog?

  1. boiled chicken and rice – a really really bland diet will help in the short term for diar. for sure – keep this up for a few days until faeces go back to normal, then slowly introduce normal food back in..

Since the problem has existed for more than a day or so i would take it to the vet to have it checked out, esp if the dog is off its food, lethargic or has any change in behaviour that seems unusual to you.

Just ensure the dog is still drinking and eating as normal and is still lively and happy. If diar. persists def. take in for a check up :)

edit: i would suggest not feeding the dog if there was vomiting present, but since vomiting does not seem to be present a bland diet is recommended rather than no food at all so as to keep hydration levels up – even if you can feed the boiled chicken broth as well since that is rather bland too.

  5. nothing! do not feed ur dog for 24hours, it will not starve in this time but it will have chance to get over the bug causing the upset stomach. feeding it will only prolong the illness. if it is not better after another day (with no food) yes, you should check him out at the vets.
good luck, hope doggy is ok

  6. My vet told me to feed my dog a mix of rice and cooked egg. Keep the dog hydrated but do take him to vet as soon as possible.

  7. Pepto will help. Just a small bit of it should take care of it. And if you have change foods switch back to the old one. Dry dog food will help to hardin the poo up. If i doesnt stop in a week i would take him to the vets office. So many things could be the cause and if that doesnt help then it might be something more serious.

  8. The standard answer I get from the vet is boiled chicken and rice because my dog goes through bouts of vomiting and diarrhea whenever he eats something that doesn’t agree with him. First give him water only for at least 12 hours 24is best (unless it is a puppy) then give him a little of the mix if he won’t eat rice try some sort of noodles I use whole wheat macaroni for my dog he won’t eat rice. Cook the grains until they are very soft and mix in the chicken start with very small meals 3-5 times a day don’t give him water right after he eats wait 20-30 minutes then leave the water down. If he tolerates this and his stool starts to be closer to normal add some of his food in a little at a time If none of this even starts to help take him to the vet

  9. According to my vet that I’ve been going to for over 20 years,Nothing for 24 hours!! Except water. Then, the next day,BOIL some hamburger in water……..make some rice, the old fashined way, boiled in water also.about a 50/50 mix…..or 75% rice 25% hamburger will also do.Serve him this for a coupple days.If he STILL has diarrhea,a visit to the vet, along with a stool sample may be in order.Good luck.

  10. try a couple spoonfuls of canned pumpkin with each meal. This should firm him up. If this doesn’t work after a couple of days, yes, bring him to the vet. Also rice and boiled chicken, (bland diet) would be good.

  11. Our vet prescribed a canned medicine type of food that is very bland and helps to get them back to normal. Also, she suggested giving our puppy some plain yogurt. It helps with their system.

  13. more facts are needed to make a correct diagnosis, but i do know that vets will give plain old keopectate for dogs who just have a regular case of the runs. But you probably should make sure the dog isn’t running a fever or acting lethargic which could be signs of an illness or getting into something poisionous. Also, feed your dog a good brand of hard food every day and make sure he has plenty of fresh water.Don’t feed him the cheapest food you can find, because they rarely have anything good in them, they are full of "fillers". Not saying you have to spend an arm and leg, either. Pedigree or Purina are very good choices and not too expensive. Contrary to popular belief, dogs and cats do not need wet food in their diets at all, because they are usually too rich and not nutritional enough (and can cause diarrehea) unless, of course, prescribed by your vet who will give wet food for a list of different ailments or for dogs who are older. Also, the best benefit of dry dog food is that it cleans the teeth when the animal crunches on it, which will definitely save you in the long run!!
