Question by Dumb Blonde!!!: Dog Adoption???????????????????
My mom and I are considering to adopt a dog. What are the factors we require to do to get prepared. We know we want to get a shih tzu so do we get the supplies very first. Or do we uncover the correct dog then get the stuff? How is the whole adoption process handled. When contacting the adoption agency most ask to e-mail not call. What do you want to contain in that e-mail? I have looked on petfinder.com for the right dogs.

A shih-tzu is a Excellent starter dog. They don’t shed, are Very friendly, and are sooo cute. It really does not matter which order you get the stuff. And it depends on how you adopt your dog. If you get it from a breeder, it is a little simpliar. But you can also get a dog from the Humain Society, ASPCA, a neighborhood Animal Shelter, or the American Kennel Club. (AKC) Hope this helps!!

As far as preparing for the dog, if you know what size dog you’re looking for you should be able to get a kennel, food, bed, or anything else like that for the dog. It’s up to you if you’d want to get a leash and collar yet, cause you might want to wait to make sure you get the right fit for the dog – that’s up to you. I’d also wait on the toys until you can take the dog into the store, cause if they have no interest in it at the pet store, more than likely they won’t like it when you bring it home!
Make sure to do your research as far as nutrition to make sure you’re getting a great food for your potential pup. Stay away from anything you can buy at Walmart!
Also, make sure to puppy/dog proof your home before the pup gets there! Make sure you’ve got a vet picked out, emergency vet picked out, and trainer / training tips ready!

I always adopt a dog. I’ll never get ripped off by a breeder again. I go to the shelters and check out the dogs myself. I never decide what breed of dog I want until i find it. Once I find it, I make all the necessary inquiries. Shots, Micro chipped, health issues, spayed/neutered etc. Once all my questions have been answered, then I start picking up the necessities for the dog. After I get the dog home and get to know her/him a little, I go and buy what ever my particular dog needs to be happy. In the case of my present little girl, she would much rather have an couple of old socks with holes in them with a knot tied in the middle than anything else. Good luck with your new little friend. I hope you’ll have many happy years to enjoy them.
One little note: Please never skimp on the dog food. A lot of dog foods sold especially in the grocery stores, are packed with fillers. They use fancy names for these fillers but the fact remains……they’re just fillers. I buy my dog food from a reputable dog food supply store. It has no corn wheat etc etc. It’s just good wholesome nutrients ( Chicken, fruit and vegetables ). It cost me $ 13 a month for a 3 pound bag. My little girl gets 1/2 cup a day and rarely eats that much. She’s never hungry, in fact she’s getting a little belly on her. Please, for your dog’s good health, be concerned about what you feed it. You’ll use less of a good food than you will of a cheap brand. Years ago I worked for a pet food company. One of the fillers had a fancy name that I really can’t remember. The truth was, there really is no substitute for the name in layman’s terms…. sawdust.
