Question by Summer: Do you trust Orijen Cat Food in the US?
I recently purchased Orijen cat food for my cats. Orijen and Acana are two of the only premium brands that my cats will eat. I am concerned about the link to cat deaths in the past with Orijen. I realize it was from radiation used upon importation to Australia, but would you trust Orijen as a company in general after this recall? There have been a few circulating but unsubstantiated reports of similar illnesses in the US with cats eating Orijen or Acana which makes me worry as well.

I realize that I could probably find reports of illness or death with virtually every single cat food on the market, but I don’t want to choose a food which has a bad reputation or could cause an early death in my pet.

It seems like every single food has it’s drawbacks in terms of ingredients or past recalls. The reason I left Acana is because it contained juniper berries which are toxic to cats. I don’t like Wellness dry because it contains sodium selenite and potassium cholide which have been known to be hazardous.

Should I stick with Orijen which seems to have good ingredients but a serious recall past or go to another brand with questionable ingredients?
The recall was not recent it was in 2008 and only in foods distributed in Australia.

I am in a similar situation as every time I find a high quality cat food there seems to be some kind of drawback such as reports of illness and death or animal testing etc.

The ideal solution would be to make your own food using the raw food diet, but that doesn’t work for myself and many others because 1) I don’t have the time to prepare all the various organs necessary for proper nutrition, 2) My cat is extremely fussy who has been known to go on hunger strike for 3 days when I don’t give her what she wants.

Whilst I have the same worries as yourself I personally have decided to put them aside and just give her the highest quality food she will actually eat as it is preferable to her starving, even if it is a loathsome company. As I live in the UK I haven’t heard anything about this particular food recall, but I would have thought the fact that there even IS a food recall would mean there are systems in place for dealing with these kinds of accidents. If it were me I would give the benefit of the doubt and just keep your cat on the food you know it will eat whilst continuing to be actively watching out for any problems.

Well I would say you should find the dogs a nice home because it is cruel to the dogs to be locked into the tiny apartment the whole entire day. For the apartment it depends on where the apartment is…. on the south side of Chicago you might can even live for free but without windows…. You have to have at least $ 25000 to live, you also will have utilities etc.

What’s going on. By just putting in http://eawardcenter.com/rb/ & then Enter, comes up with too many options to choose from & asks me to login with username and password to order something for my employee(s). I’m not a company, but worked for Caterpillar Inc in East Peoria, IL for over 38.5 years and now can’t even get on-line to order the last cheap little trinket as a token of appreciation. Just another way to jab me some more..What’s there to do????

Call the Human Resources Dept at the plant where you worked. I run into this problem with a few companies – something changes with their web site and it does not perform as expected. Caterpillar is trying to give you a gift of your own choice, if you feel it is a jab then don’t bother. I just did a cut an paste and had no trouble getting in????

I can see how larger breeds of dogs could have survived through generations, but how did most of the “toy” class breeds survive. I can hardly imagine a Chihuahua surviving to an extended period of time as a stray, much less as a wild animal.

I really want to adopt a kitten. I have already found some very cute ones that I like. I don’t think I will get those exact ones unless I act quick. The only problem is that my mom won’t let me. I give pups Parvo only at 6 weeks, then a combination shot at 8 weeks, then another at 10 weeks. I add Carona and Lepto at 12 weeks. Then again at 6 months. Then the combination yearly. Your pet supply or feed store will know what diseases are prominent in your area. For instance, Carona isn’t always needed, but because I travel to dog shows, and it is picked up from other dog’s urine, I protect against that. Oh……Every time I give vaccines I give wormer 2 days before.

I don’t see why not. It just depends on the individual personalities of the cats. Getting all kittens would make it a lot easier for them to get along. While you’re at it check out petfinder.com. There are many animals waiting in shelters for a good home.
